Akira

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Apr 23, 2012

9.75 (excellent) Directed and written by Katsuhir Otomo Akira is one of the best anime pictures of all times. The story is complex and well thought out. The animation is top notice and recent shows can’t even come close to the detail in Akira or should learn form it. The detail in the buildings in the background and the designs of the bikes are top notch. Many manga and anime artist do say that Akira influenced them, such as the great and late departed Satoshi Kan. Akira has not gotten so much hype for no reason. The movie is set in a post war setting where Japan was destroyed and motorcycle gangs crowd the over populated streets of Neo-Tokyo. There are many underlying themes that help add to the story like that of over population, economy war and post-war, youthful rebellions, along with many other themes. The character’s develop well and grow through out the movie. Kaneda is my favorite character. His love for Tetsuo is admirable and his carefree attitude is well portrayed in the anime. How the story moves quickly and keeps building up all the way to a monumental ending that is praise worthy. I like watching the anime in Japanese with English subs but it is one of the few animes that has a good English dubbing with the new release in 2001. If you love anime this is a must see film but I think that everyone even who is not into anime should see it and will enjoy it.

Mushishi

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Apr 23, 2012

9.75 (excellent) Directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, Art design Yoshihilo Umakoshi, Original Manga by Yuki Urushibara. Mushishi is one of those anime that come along and stun people. I would truly call this anime a work of art. The art in the anime is sublime, of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe. You can’t help but just pause a frame just to admire the scenery that is depicted. Most of the stories are in mountains areas or on the coastline, which makes sense since it’s setting is on Japan. The protagonist of the story is Ginko, a traveling medical man of sorts, is laid back, smart and caring. He wonders around Japan collecting objects and characteristics of things called mushi. Mushi are an invisible bug like spirit. Most people cannot see them, Ginko is one of the few who can see them. This mushi can be mysterious, deadly, or mundane. Every episode has a different story of Ginko helping someone involved with mushi. One of my favorite episodes is one where him and another traveler are searching for a mushi that lives in a rainbow. Every episode has its own unique atmosphere that always was strong mysterious emotions. What adds to the atmosphere is the music composition. Toshio Masuda does a great job on composing the music to fit the otherworldly atmosphere of the show. I recommend this anime to anyone who has a little interest in anime at all.

Grave of the Fireflies

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Apr 23, 2012

9.75 (excellent) Directed by Isao Takahata. Grave of the Fireflies is a masterpiece not just among anime but also among films in general. The setting is during the final part of WWII and about two young children who lose their mother to a firebombing. It is a tale of loss during war, emotions during war, and the sorrow of war in general. There are so many rememberable scenes in the movie that it is hard to even mention one because I would have to mentioning them all. Seita and his sister Setsuko have such a great bond that makes the end of the movie even harder to watch and accept. The art in the movie is well done. Every scene has effort put into it. The story is a based on Isao Takahata’s life experience during the war. The movie has a powerful anti-war message that is pretty straightforward. It shows how it affects all people on all sides of the war. Foreigners, like the Korean in the film, under privileged people like Seita’s family, and military men. Although it is a very sad movie I still watch it. I like to show it to my friends who like Japan or Anime. I would recommend this movie to anyone that loves films about war, specifically ones against it

Five Centimeters Per Second

Seen: completely; Own: completely;

Last Updated: Apr 23, 2012

9.25 (very good) Directed by Makoto Shinkai. Five Centimeters Per Second is sad, tragic, sweet, poetic, touching, and melancholy still this movie is astounding. This movie is a great work of art no matter how sad it is. Every scene you can feel the effort put into it to make it shine. The story is about young love and how far it can span in years and in distance apart. The story is done form the lead male, Tono Takaki, and is about his friendship and feelings for his close childhood friend Shinohara Akari. The story spans over many years. The show makes a great attempt to form a melancholy atmosphere but with hope mixed in and it does it well. Every time something progresses in the story line you always want it to go Takaki’s way and have him and Akari reconnect. The end is very powerful when the movie suggjest that Takaki and Akari walk by each other but a train cuts off their view of each other and by the time it passes by Akari has walked off leaving Takaki to wonder. It tells of regreat, moving forward, and lost love in the most powerful way. The music composition is great. Every song adds to the story. Tenmon does a great job setting up the music to help the mood of the movie. I enjoyed this movie and love to re-watch it even if it just makes you want to cry.

Air Gear

Seen: completely; Own: partially;

Last Updated: Apr 21, 2012

9.00 (very good) This anime is a great series with a strong ending and good characters. Air Gear is about a young boy named itsuki minami, aka ikki, who rides A-T with his friends as they rise to the top of the A-T world. What I like about this series is that it is inventive, intuitive, and adventurous. The A-T’s that are designed are a great new way to look at extreme sports such as skateboarding or rollerblading. The mangaka, Oh! Great, looks in-depth to how an A-T could actually work. His character design good. I do not like the fan service as much as others probably do but his male characters Ikki, Kazu, and all the others are well done. The characters are well developed through out the manga and anime. The anime is not as long as the manga, it really barely scratches the surface of where the manga goes but the manga has gotten a little confusing toward the end. The part that the anime does cover however is very well done. I would even say that how the anime ends is better then how the manga is done at the end of the arc that it fallows. I really liked how the anime’s atmosphere felt while Ikki was jumping over all of his friends at the end of the anime. Ikki’s feelings really hit you hard while you are watching him try to make it over and push through to the end. The music to the anime is great. It is a little techno like and the opening theme is a great match for the show and is a great song to listen to. Over all I would say that the anime series is a very solid anime and worth a watch if you like shonen anime and manga.
